Biography

Born in Dublin in 1945, Sean Scully is one of the most respected and well-known artists of his generation. He occupies a unique place in the contemporary art scene, and is widely credited with having expanded the possibilities of abstract painting after Minimalism. Scully adheres to a reduced formal repertoire of lines, stripes and blocks; however, this does not restrict his investigation of human aspiration, perfection, freedom, and infinity. His works point towards the canon of European art, and modern influences include Mark Rothko.
