Biography
Born in Dublin in 1945, Sean Scully is one of the most respected and well-known artists of his generation. He occupies a unique place in the contemporary art scene, and is widely credited with having expanded the possibilities of abstract painting after Minimalism. Scully adheres to a reduced formal repertoire of lines, stripes and blocks; however, this does not restrict his investigation of human aspiration, perfection, freedom, and infinity. His works point towards the canon of European art, and modern influences include Mark Rothko. Sean Scully retrospective exhibitions include Whitechapel Gallery, London, 1989; Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, 1995; Joan Miró Foundation, Barcelona, 2007; Musée d’Art Moderne de Saint Etienne, France, 2008 and Museo d'Arte Contemporanea, Rome, 2008
